What should we Tell The People At Work?
This is and always will be a difficult to answer question as every circumstance is different and you know your relationship with your employers better than we ever will.
Some general pointers are that there is no possibility that they can help you or your family if you don't give them a chance and in the main employers are very sympathetic when confronted with a genuine medical problem.
Many employers have insurance policies that 'kick in' to help you in the case of both illness and terminal disease.
No advice in this instance can be right as you know the circumstances better than most, but in the main it is surprising how often people realy come up trumps to try to help.

Personal Experiences
In our case we found it easier to keep regular contact with Kevin's boss who in turn informed all staff members at weekly meetings. It was easier than repeating everything 2 or 3 times over and avoided confusion for everyone. Luckily Richard has been involved from the beginning and has been a great help with our journey often suggesting 'jump the queue' options and financially enabling us to do so. Richard has taken an active interest looking up websites and informing us when we were unsure of the next step. My advice is to be completely honest. In this age of 'instant knowledge' websites such as this will inform anyone and it is much easier to be truthful to allow your work collegues to give you the support you and your family need. We are very lucky in this respect. Kevin is a Quality Director and his position may seem privileged but I have found his boss to be the same with all his employees (although none with as serious an illness). So to recap.... Inform work as soon as possible (this avoids confusion as to why your mental state and physical being are so fragile) Make contact with 1 person whom you trust that can pass on information to the key people in your individual case (try Human Resources?) They will give regular updates to your other work collegues Always be upfront and honest about how you are feeling (I was always saying 'fine' and Richard was surprised that Kevin had gone downhill so quickly..now I say exactly how he is) Allow work collegues to 'get their heads' round it...it takes a while! (one of the auditors that works in Kevin's department phones me regularly to cry...I console well!) All in all my advice is just that...my own advice...I realise that the work issue hasn't really affected us to any great extent but I have learnt that honesty really does tend to be the best policy.
