Canada has access to new treatment for kidney cancer

Toronto - A new treatment for kidney cancer is available in Canada and it extends the overall survival for patients with advanced kidney cancer by 49 per cent.

In trials, patients taking Torisel also experienced a 77 per cent improvement in the length of time before the disease got worse. Until now, no other kidney cancer therapy provided a statistically significant increase in how long a patient lived while also maintaining their quality of life.

Kidney cancer is generally diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 70 and tends to affect more men than women. Approximately 25 per cent of patients with this type of cancer are initially diagnosed when they are in the advanced stages of the disease.

The five year survival rate for a patient diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer is only between five and 10 per cent.
