Personal Experiences
I initially spoke to the attendance and student welfare officer. I told him the truth as there may have been a point when my son would need time off from school. I also used parents evening to make the staff more aware and they were happy to discuss our situation. No concessions were made during lessons and homework was still assigned and expected to be done! I left it up to my son whether to inform his friends. (some still don't know!) In our case my son was starting his GCSE exams. The 'special needs' staff asked me to provide proof of my husbands illness as concessions are made for exceptional home circumstances during exam times. I took in a copy of a sick note and a copy of biopsy results. The school was then able to provide the examination board with valid reasons as to why our son was preoccupied with home life. These considerations were taken into account in marking his exam papers. I am proud to say my son sailed through the GCSE exams and is now studying AS level at college. USER: Kitty.
