From Kidney Cancer Resource

Jump to: navigation, search

Hi,

when I was early stages, with my cancer, back in 1998 I struggled to find information and the internet was pretty allien to me - the internet and I have come a long way since!

There was very little on Urology on the internet at that stage that I could track down. A huge amount has been uploaded since and many cancer sites have come an incredibly long way, with a huge amount of info. There is still a certain air of possessiveness amongst some who provide help and famously when I tracked one organisation in the UK they were off hand to the point of offensive and were clearly there for their benefit - a collection of stuffed shirts - determined to charge me £25 for information and far more determined to impress people so that they looked clever than to help people with KC

Quickly moving on: I have now found a plethora of information dotted around all over the internet with many sites containing a wealth of information but I had yet to find a site that was easy to follow, easy to read and available to all, which was intelligible to those with poor computer skills, poor lingusistic skills, poor reading ability and no medical knowledge who found what skills they might have turned to jelly by the fear of Cancer.

To start with I read and read and read but all too ofeten I found I had moved on and lost the links I, on reflection, needed. I wanted a web site that aggregated all the information I needed together in one easy to follow area.

When Andy Thomas called me and said he had found this software and could host it for a while and would I help him get it going - I immediately thought of the couple in their late 50s where the breadwinner received a Diagnosis of Kidney Cancer they didn't have a computer and they didn't speak English as a first language so they went to the library to try to find out or to their Citizens Advice Bureau.

Kidney Cancer Resource clearly provided the opportunity for all to form a Resource that was easy to use for the not very literate - they get Kidney Cancer too, not just the educated! - and the further one drilled down the more complex and comprehensive the information could become.

Links - it seemed that we should have the site extensively linked and with the bulk of the information aggregated on the one simple to use and easily cross referenced site.

May I take this opportunity to thank the medical team that has kept me alive, my family who have helped and my partner Lee as she has provided the reason and both brave and tollerant support through every mood from terror to anger, complacency to cowardice, selfish determination to beat The Challenge is often not easy to live with! During this time my Father died in his 80s cancer related and we lost Lee's Mother Jean too young to a very ugly form of lung cancer metastesised to the brain.

Thank you to all the friends who have done so much to help Lee and I during these years of Challenge.

I hope this helps to explain this site a little more and if you wish to discuss it in more detail, this article is in extended form with more information available from Greg L-W. - To see more Just drill down by Clicking Here
