Major symposium examines new cancer treatments

International experts will gather in Dubai this weekend for a major symposium on oncology, which will include sessions on breakthrough treatments for forms of cancer which previously had no viable remedies.

Professor Eric Raymond, Professor of Oncology, Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital and Professor Stéphane Oudard, Assistant Professor of Oncology at Georges Pompidou Hospital - both of Paris, France - are coming to Dubai to present new data at the symposium.

According to World Health Organisation figures, more than 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year and it is estimated that there will be 15 million new cases every year by 2020. Cancer causes six million deaths every year - or 12% of deaths worldwide.

However, new advances in treatment and diagnostic technology are helping to ensure that more cancer patients are able to survive with an improved quality of life.

Dr. Emad Aly, Medical Director, Pfizer, Middle East Region said: 'Because the need for new cancer treatments is so great, cancer is an extremely important research priority, so events like this Symposium provide an important opportunity to share knowledge and discuss new breakthroughs in the field of oncology.'

A major source of discussion at the event will be Sutent, a new oral therapy belonging to a new class of multiple receptor tyrosine kinases inhibitors, which attack cancer by inhibiting both tumour growth and blood supply.

The treatment has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of advanced kidney cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumour, a rare stomach and intestinal cancer. It is the first time that the FDA has approved a new cancer treatment for two indications simultaneously.
